fishSAFE Team assembling in Bangladesh

Day One – Arrival in Bangladesh

The team have arrived and assembled from various corners of the world.

The team have arrived and assembled from various corners of the world. We have Darren Mitchell, the project’s manager and chief in charge of organising our logistics, with the New Zealand team, to get here. There is Dr Debbie Bygvraa from the University of Southern Denmark and her husband Henning, me, Dr Kate Pike of Field-Research from the UK and Dr Ilona Denisenko (of the medical variety) has joined us from Russia. Dr Sazedul Hoque is our Bangladesh host from Patuakhali Science and Technology University where we will be heading tomorrow for an official welcome and to present the project.

Getting off the plane

This morning we flew from Dhaka to Barisal and had a bit of time catching up on emails and project admin. Ilona and I spent an hour looking around the local hospital here which was shocking in terms of its over-crowding, lack of resources and hygiene. The hospital has provided a backdrop to the poverty here generally and has offered a perspective on the lives of poor fishermen who often have serious accidents and fatalities caused by their work. Tomorrow we will travel to Patuakhali University for an official welcome and to present the project. We will be keeping you up to date with our activities!
