Ghost Gear Project – Bangladesh

We are pleased to announce that our Associate, Dr Sazedul Hoque, Professor and Chairman of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Southern Bangladesh, will be leading an important project on the status and impact of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG or ‘ghost gear’) in the Bay of Bengal area.

This work has been funded by the Global Ghost Gear Initiative and Ocean Conservancy and will focus on the Southern Bangladesh regions of Patuakhali (Kuakata) and Cox’s Bazar.

ALDFG not only seriously compromises the health of our oceans, marine life and the wider environment, but also poses a potential safety risk to fishers at sea who may find their gears or equipment becoming entangled by ghost gear.

The overall aims of this project are:

  • Assess the current status of ALDFG in the Southern coastal area of Bangladesh. This will include efforts to remove such gear from the project areas.
  • Identify the present state of knowledge, practice, and attitudes towards ALDFG by fishers in the project areas.
  • Awareness and capacity building of fishers in project areas to avoid ALDFG.

FISH Safety Foundation is excited to support and collaborate on this vitally important project. We are already actively involved in work in Southern Bangladesh, so this will complement the ongoing efforts there to improve the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

We are a leading non-profit dedicated to promoting safety and sustainability in the fishing industry.
