East Africa

The safety concerns of fishers in East Africa's fishing industry are a pressing issue that needs to be addressed urgently. Fishers face a myriad of challenges that jeopardize their well-being and livelihoods.

Spotlight

The lack of safety measures and proper equipment, coupled with inadequate training, often exposes fishers to hazardous conditions and accidents at sea. Incidents such as boat capsizing, injuries caused by fishing equipment, and even loss of life are unfortunately prevalent.

Availability of safety equipment

One of the key issues facing East African fishermen is the lack of access to proper safety equipment. Many fishermen do not have access to life jackets, safety helmets, or other essential gear that could protect them in case of accidents or emergencies at sea. This puts their lives at risk and increases the likelihood of fatalities.

Limited training and awareness

Another major challenge is the limited training and awareness regarding safety measures among East African fishermen. Most fishermen lack formal training in swimming, first aid, or emergency response techniques. As a result, they may not be adequately prepared to handle dangerous situations such as capsizing, harsh weather conditions, or medical emergencies while out at sea.
